The Basics of Poker

Poker

Essentially, Poker is a gambling game wherein players place bets on a hand of cards. The objective is to have the best hand possible. A hand is usually made up of five cards of the same suit. The best hand possible is a “trip” (three of a kind) or “nuts” (four of a kind).

The first hand is made by the initial dealer. A dealer is a player who shuffles and deals the cards. The cards are then distributed to the players one by one. Typically, cards are dealt face up.

Several betting rounds may be played. Each round is separated by an interval called a betting interval. The betting interval lasts for a few minutes. After the betting interval, the player who made the best bet may check, or re-raise. If no one re-raises, the betting interval ends.

The best hand is the nuts, or “trip” (three of a kind). The nuts is made up of two jacks, three aces, and two queens. The ace is often treated as the lowest card in some games.

A straight flush is a five card hand that starts with the highest value card. This hand can be made up of aces, queens, and kings. A four of a kind is considered a strong hand, as is a three of a kind with a pair. A king, queen, and a jack is considered a weak hand.

A stud poker game typically consists of five or seven cards per hand. The dealer must put together the best hand possible from the cards that he has in hand.
