The Basics of Poker

Poker

As the game of Poker continues, players will increase their betting amounts. The amounts will be predetermined in a fixed limit game and pot-limit betting. Poker terms include raise, call, and fold. A raise adds more chips to one’s hand, while a call matches the amount bet by an opponent. This action is referred to as a “raise.”

The blinds are the money put on the table before the cards are dealt. These are typically chips. If more than one all-in player, multiple side pots will be created. The player who has an all-in hand will only be eligible to win the pot that he contributed to. The players who fold will not be eligible to win the pot. When a player raises, he will raise his table bet. If he folds, his cards will remain face-up on the table.

Redealting the flop is another option. Sometimes the flop has been too many or too early. If that happens, the dealer will cut the deck and deal a new flop without burning the card. This is called a “redeal.”

In almost all variants of Poker, the players will use chips. The white chip is the least valuable. A red chip is worth five whites. A blue chip is worth ten or twenty or more whites. The blue chip is worth two, four, or five reds. Players “buy in” to a game by purchasing chips. This is usually done with the same amount. If a player folds before the game is over, he will be denied his share of the kitty.
